Activision Marketing, Gone too Far?
By Jordan Shearer on Jun 10, 2008 in News
Well, we have seen Activision do some crazy things, but this really pushes it.
To “celebrate” the Isle of Wight festival, Activision has added a couple of modifications to the nearby bronze statue of guitarist Jimi Hendrix, making the guitar on Jimi’s statue a Guitar Hero controler, adding fret buttons and a Guitar Hero logo to the guitar that the statue holds.
To me, at least, this comes off as marketing gone too far. You also may remember that the Hendrix estate did not wan’t Jimi’s “Spanish Castle Magic” in the first Guitar Hero, which resulted in it having no vocal track, so I can’t see this going over well with the Hendrix family.

Just how do we know Activision did this?

Kotaku is a site we know, love, and trust.
We didn’t publish this when we first heard the story until it could be vetted by, what we consider to be, a reputable outlet.
The statue in the picture is, in fact, the Hendrix statue outside of the Isle Of Wight Festival grounds… There is just a bit of trust on our part based on the Kotaku story, and all of the other 50+ sites that have the same story…
Here’s a link to the picture of the statue, it might be of interest…
