Guitar Hero

guitar_hero_logo1.gifGuitar Hero was the first game in the Guitar Hero Series.

Guitar Hero was developed by Harmonix and published by Red Octane for the Playstation 2 video game console.

Guitar Hero was first released on November 8, 2005 in North America.

The game was unique because of it’s inclusion of a guitar shaped controller.  The gameplay is similar to GuitarFreaks, in that the player presses buttons on the guitar controller in-time with musical notes that scroll on the game screen.

Guitar Hero was a surprise hit both critically and commercially and has spawned at least 7 sequels and other similar products.

Gameplay

The gameplay in Guitar Hero is similar to rhythm or music games in that players must press buttons on a game controller in time with notes scrolling down a screen.  Included in the Guitar Hero bundle was a guitar shaped controller that was modelled on the Gibson SG Guitar.  The guitar controller has 5 colored fret buttons on the neck of the guitar and a strum and whammy bar on the body of the guitar.

The music is displayed on the screen as notes that scroll down and that match the colors of the fret buttons on the guitar controller.  To play a note, the player must hold down the fret button corresponding to the notes shown on the screen and then strum on the strum bar at the same time that a note passes through a marked area on the screen.

Guitar Hero also features hammer-on and pull-off (HOPO) techniques that, similar to playing notes on a real guitar, has sections where a player can play notes without having to strum each note.

Game Modes

The main game mode in Guitar Hero is the Career mode.  In Career mode the player and band travel around to fictional venues and perform sets of 4 or 5 songs.  Completing songs in Career mode unlocks the songs for play in the other game modes.
