Rock Band is developed by Harmonix and is published by MTV Games.
Rock Band is the first game in the Rock Band Series.
Gameplay
The gameplay in Rock Band is similar to rhythm or music games in that players must press buttons on a game controller in time with notes scrolling down a screen. Included in the Rock Band bundle was a guitar shaped controller that was modelled on the Fender Stratocaster, as well as an electronic drum set and microphone. The guitar controller has 5 colored fret buttons on the neck of the guitar and a strum and whammy bar on the body of the guitar. The drum controller features 4 colored drum pads and a kick pedal and has adjustable height. The Rock Band microphone is similar to microphones from karaoke type games but has an additional sensor to allow the microphone to be struck for parts with tambourines or cowbells.
The music is displayed on the screen as notes that scroll down and that match the colors of the fret buttons on the guitar controller. To play a note on the guitar controller, the player must hold down the fret button corresponding to the notes shown on the screen and then strum on the strum bar at the same time that a note passes through a marked area on the screen. To play the notes on the drums, the player must strike the drum pads or step on the kick pedal. Gameplay with the microphone is like that of most karaoke games where the game will measure the pitch of your voice and award points accordingly. For parts where the microphone is to be tapped, circles scroll across the screen and the microphone is tapped when the circle passes through the marked area on the screen.
Rock Band also features hammer-on and pull-off (HOPO) techniques that, similar to playing notes on a real guitar, has sections where a player can play notes without having to strum each note. There is also a second set of frets on the guitar controller, closer to the body, which during ’solos’ can be used to fret the notes without having to strum.
